Someone has placed a finch feeder in the tree by the stoplight.  Just for fun, I tried to take their pictures.  This is what I got.

A new butterfly and a weird spider

I found a really pretty black butterfly out in the field, and when I got home I found a really weird spider on the plastic I was using to cover the hay in the metal barn.  If spiders bother you, please DO NOT scroll down.  He was just so unusual I had to photograph him so I could find out what kind of spider he is.

I keep trying to photograph one of the little tiny blue butterflys.  They are only the size of the nail on my little finger.  I guess I still haven’t got a good picture of it.  …Now, don’t forget.  The spider comes next.

How about that for an unusual looking spider?

August 19, 2010 A Surprising Moth

Good morning…from the farm.

When I went down to let the dogs out, I discovered a large moth on the screen door.  I tried to get a good picture of it, but didn’t succeed too well, however it did stay long enough for me to take a picture of it’s  under wings – which it flashes to deter predators'.  I’d take off if I saw those eyes looking at me, too!

Interesting effect, wouldn’t you say? (even though my pictures this time aren’t too good!)

Twofer Butterfly

I was thinking, I don't have a picture of a yellow butterfly to put in my collection.  Then, as I was walking up to the site, I saw an odd, two toned yellow butterfly.  Turned out it was actually two butterflies doing what butterflies do.

 

It was hard for me to get close enogh to the ground to take the picture.  I took half a dozen pictures and it didn't phase them at all.  They were still at it when I walked away and left them in peace.

A little blue...butterfly

This is the first one I've seen this year.  They are very small, and hard to see.  They also rarely seem to open up their wings when they are sitting on a flower.  This was the best that I could do, but I wanted to add him to my butterfly collection.

Another Butterfly for my Collection

I spotted this butterfly as I was leaving the Blaisure well.  It took me a bunch of tries to get the pictures.  It always managed to get it's wings closed just as I snapped the shot.  Isn't this a pretty variety?

July 20, 2010 Butterfly Collection Addition

Good evening...from the farm.

I didn't see any mention of it in the news, but 41 years ago today, we landed on the moon.  As a nation, we seemed younger then, and more vital, with higher aspirations.  I look around today and think how the mighty have fallen.  What happened to us? 

On the way to take pictures, I found a lively butterfly in a variety that I haven't photographed before.  Sort of fitting.  I think it's called a Mourning Cloak.

July 3, 2010 Moth

Good evening...from the farm.

Here's an interesting moth to add to my butterfly etc collection.  I found it laying on the pavement in front of the house.  Poor thing looked pretty beat up - like it had been munched on.  I moved it into the shade under the house, and when I checked after a bit, it was gone.  So maybe it recovered and took off.

June 26, 2010 Garden Work

Good morning...from the farm.

I looks like it's going to be a good weekend for working outside.  Yesterday, while I was out, I took the chance to stop at my favorite Taylor Rental place.  Yes, the Honda weedeater had just come back.  Give them a chance to clean it up and it was mine for the weekend.

OK.  I had been wanting to try PJs Cafe for a while, so I stopped over there for lunch.  Well, bar with a small dining room is more like it, but I have to say the Ruben sandwich was excellent.  Best I've had in a long long time.

I was able to get some hand weeding done in what will be my perennial garden.  I wasn't sure that much survived, but I have a hugh bunch of Matricaria (I forget what it is - little white pom pom flowers.)  Also the Veronica came up, and the dasies (Rubeckia, I think.)  The thing that pleased me most, a bunch of bee balm came up.  I love those weird red flowers!  Take a look.

June 20, 2010 Happy Father's Day

Good evening...from the farm.

Happy Father's Day to everyone.  My own Dad and Grandfathers are no longer alive, but their memory is always with me.  They're always in my thoughts and prayers.  A special wish for a successful recovery to a Dad in the hospital.  And thank you to all the Dads away from their families in the military.

That last picture is some kind of black moth.  The fuzzy antennae are the give-away.
